Cykochik Compassionate Citizen - James Scott

James Scott

Founder of Texas Veggie Fair and

What is your favorite quote or mantra?
"You miss one hundred percent of the shots you don't take."
- Wayne Gretzky (true in hockey, and pretty much everything else in life!).

What are some must-read books that have inspired/changed you? Why?
Thrive by Brendan Brazier
I’d read many books focusing on how eating a plant-based diet is better for your health with respect to serious conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, but as a fitness enthusiast, Thrive was the first book I read that really explained in a scientific manner how this kind of a diet could really equate to better performance.

Who/what inspires you? Why?
I think what inspires me most is to see others getting out there and making something happen. It could be something as simple as taking an afternoon to leaflet with the The Humane League, or organizing other events such as dining out, potlucks, or even large festivals. When I see others taking initiative to do what they can to improve the world around them, it inspires me to push myself to keep at it.

What are some of your advice or tips for being a Compassionate Citizen?
I think one of the best things you can do is to recognize that not everyone has had the same life experience and exposure to certain ideas that you have - and that treating everyone with compassion and understanding is more effective than lecturing or shaming someone into believing in the same things you do.
